Engineers from SMEC (Snomy Mountains Engineering Corporation), who have been contracted by ACT Roads to design the new bridge over the Gudgenby, met with community representatives this morning (28 November 2011).
They advised that the new bridge will most likely be:
- single lane - but will be designed to be expanded to dual lane if required in the future
- 2 to 3 metres higher than the original;
- single span - less infrastructure to catch debris;
- about the same length as the old bridge (27m); and
- positioned slightly downstream from the bailey bridge on the Tharwa side and slightly east of the bailey bridge on the Smiths Road side.
It is anticipated that ACT Roads will go to tender for construction of the bridge in July/August next year with work to commence in about October. The project would probably take about 8 months.
We stressed the importance of being able to use the bailey bridge during the construction period and of the community being advised of any temporary road closures. We suggested that community consultation be incorporated into the tender.
Following the meeting I contacted Tony Gill who is happy to talk to the community at the scheduled Community Committee meeting at 6:30pm on 15 March 2012, once the design is finalised.

Jenny Filmer advised that their mail box, and Jim Desmarchelier’s mail box, were maliciously damaged somewhere between 6.30am and 11.30am today (28 November 2011).
At some time in the past a group was operating in the area between Naas, Smiths Road and Tharwa causing property damage and break ins. With this uncharacteristic vandalism it may be a good time for people to be attentive to suspicious behaviour and vehicles in the area.

Dear All
Council has begun distributing copies of a transport survey to ascertain the viability for a commuter bus service between Cooma and Canberra. There will be hard copies available as well as an on-line copy on the CMSC website . Can you please inform your communities of the survey so that those interested can access the survey and provide Council with this information. Hard copies will be available at the Williamsdale, Michelago and Bredbo Service Stations, the Michelago Village Store, Bredbo Pub, Cooma Visitors Centre, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council front desk, Monaro Regional Library and the Mobile Library. Council will also be sending out hard copies to NAG (D & G Wicks) and Numeralla (Mark Shubert).
Council much appreciates your cooperation and assistance with distributing and encouraging interested parties to complete this survey as the information is essential in determining the need for setting up such a service.
